About the museum
The Jewish Museum in Rendsburg is one of the first Jewish museums to be founded in the Federal Republic after World War II. Started in 1988 as the Rendsburg City Museum, today we emphasize our state-wide claim and educational mission, as part of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Gottorf Castle Foundation.
The museum is located in the former community center of the Jewish community of Rendsburg. It includes the Talmud Torah School from 1830 and the only originally preserved synagogue in Schleswig-Holstein. It was built in 1844/45 - and thus before the time of the so called emancipation, the social and legal equality of Jews. That is why the building fits quite inconspicuously into the street scene. The practice of religion was permitted at that time, but should be as inconspicuous as possible.
The Jewish Museum in Rendsburg is the central site of learning about the Jewish present and history. Jews, their self-image and their positions today and in the past become visible. One focus is on conveying of information on the persecution of Jews during the Nazi era. Another is to recognize today’s forms of anti-Semitism and to position oneself. We show that we are part of a supra-regional network against anti-Semitism. We provide information material on a wide range of topics for teachers and other visitors.
The Jewish Museum is a place of historical-political education, which takes up current topics and sets new themes and social impulses.
We invite you to discover Jewish history and the present. We offer historical facts, new insights and unusual perspectives.
