House of Eternity

Jewish cemeteries Created for eternity. Apparently behind the times. They lie there sunken and mysterious and tell us something about the splendid diversity of the former Jewish population. The tombstones chronicle the people’s social status and professions, thus reflecting the extensive Jewish culture of times past.

The exhibition shows 40 black & white photographs of Jewish cemeteries in Germany, Poland, Ukraine and the Czech Republic. The photographers Marcel-Th. and Klaus Jacobs travelled to more than 50 locations where they documented their impressions. A selection was prepared from several thousand 35mm negatives, providing a little impression of the former sepulchral culture. The review of the history of the respective Jewish communities and their last resting places make the extent of the extinction of Jewish life and work in all four countries clear.
